Every organization has one: a collection of dashboards that someone spent weeks building, that leadership loved in the demo, and that nobody actually uses three months later.
The symptoms are predictable:
- Numbers that don't match across reports
- Executives asking analysts to "just pull the numbers" instead of trusting the dashboard
- Meetings about what the metrics actually mean

- Answering questions
- Investigating discrepancies
- Approving changes
Without ownership, dashboards become orphaned. They drift, they break, and nobody notices until someone complains.
Trade-offs in dashboard design
Accept these trade-offs explicitly:
- Comprehensiveness vs. clarity: More metrics isn't better. Focus beats coverage.
- Real-time vs. accuracy: Faster data often means more approximations.
- Flexibility vs. consistency: Self-service tools can create new metric drift problems.
- Pretty vs. fast: Heavy visualizations slow down load times.
When dashboards aren't the answer
Sometimes the right solution isn't a dashboard:
- One-time analyses: Use a notebook or document, not a persistent dashboard
- Alerting use cases: Don't make people check dashboards—send notifications when thresholds trigger
- Deep exploration: Provide ad-hoc query access instead of trying to anticipate every question
- Small teams: Sometimes a well-maintained spreadsheet is genuinely fine
